Chinese factory worker commits suicide after losing prototype iPhone

A Chinese worker leapt to his death after allegedly being beaten by security guards for mislaying a top-secret prototype of the latest Apple iPhone.

Sun Danyong, 25, had been responsible for sending 16 of the fourth-generation mobile phones to Apple from the factory in Shenzhen, southern China, where he worked. Ten days ago he discovered that one of the models was missing and reported it to his employer, Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese company that manufactures Apple products.

Three days later he jumped out of the window of his 12th-floor flat. Friends of Mr Sun told the Southern Metropolis Daily that the company’s security guards had searched his apartment, detained him and beaten him.

Mr Sun, a product manager, had become frantic after discovering that he had mislaid one of the gadgets. He vented his frustration in text messages to his girlfriend and to a former classmate as he tried to find the device.

Officials from Foxconn’s security division became suspicious and raided his home. The security chief of Foxconn has since been suspended and handed over to the police.

The official, Gu Qinming, denied that he struck Mr Sun. He reportedly said that Mr Sun was ordered to go to his office on July 15 after three security guards failed to find the phone in the young man’s apartment.

“I got a bit agitated,” Mr Gu told the Southern Metropolis Daily. “I pointed my finger at him and said that he was trying to shift the blame. I was a little angry and I pulled his right shoulder once to get him to tell me what happened. It [the beating] couldn’t have happened.”

The security chief said that he did not think Mr Sun was telling the truth about the missing prototype.

Apple was swift to condemn the incident. Jill Tan, a spokeswoman in Hong Kong, said: “We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death. We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect.”

The tragedy highlights the pressure surrounding the release of gadgets, and Apple is a constant target of prying journalists, obsessive customers and competitors.
